hi there!

it's not a secret that i'm a winamp fanatic.
there are thousands of winamp skins out there and i've tried quite a few.
but one of them has conquered my heart by storm.
it is called Avalon and it will always be among my personal top 3 in winamp skins.

so, if you are a regular winamp user go ahead and check out this usable, versatile, and functional musthave!!

since this is a skin release topic and not an homage speech to Jorge Mancheno -the creator of Avalon- i try to make things short. :)

one more thing, though...
...Avalon provides a notifier which lets winamp show a tiny message on any corner of your monitor that will let you know what you're currently listening to.
this notifier is where my idea for this CAD skin release came from.

although most of the styles are using the Verdana system font, there's a few styles which make it necessary that you close CAD and install the fonts included in the zip before you apply the skin (or any style)!

if you're interested in some additional styles you should make your way through the thread. there are some little gems to discover. :)
(edit) all styles posted before Sep.15 are part of the main package posted above.

also i invite you to request a style if you have something in mind that might look nice on your desktop.

furthermore i'd like to bring out a big round of applause for Jorge Mancheno, who not only created this amazing and breathtaking winamp skin, but also was very kind to give me his permission for using his Avalon notifier graphics to let this Avalon Companion come to life!

for those who like the cover to be on the right side and all other elements (text, progressbar, toolbar & ratings) to be moved accordingly set the following values. you only have to take care about boxes named "left".

I haven't the time yet to customize it so that I have my 180°-version and I can't tell you which style is my favourite one atm, but nevertheless, I made a screenshot for you, showing your skin in action:

what really took me long was the fact that i haven't had the original Avalon image source files.
so i had to screenshoot all the different themed Avalon notifiers and erase all track infos through my image editor to get blank 'cases' so i could use them for CAD. quite an annoying and repetitive job that was. :-\

doing the Otis-styles was much more fun.

once i had finished the default version i was able to copy/paste its skin.ini in all the other style subfolders so i wouldn't have to take care about text alignments and elements positions for each and every style again.
nevertheless i had to do a lot adequate text- and progressbarcolor configurations, because most of the styles use different colors.

then after i got the permission to use Jorge Mancheno's graphics i added some according comments on this to 32 skin.ini's.

not to forget that i still had to do 49 (32 plus my own 17) different skin preview images so you can tell them apart in the skin editor. :)

i wasn't really in a rush when i did all this.
the skin could have been done in 1 day, but i took my time and made it in 4.
plus the 2 days it took to upload the package at zShare. ;D

btw...
Otis-Transparent is also my favourite. :D
originally i wanted a style to match my appearance config of the informer.widget (link (http://widgets.yahoo.com/gallery/view.php?widget=39000)).
i think the result is pretty nice. ;)

here are 2 versions (plus their according 180°'s).
i know you got the font already, but everybody else has to close CAD and install the fonts included in the zip before you apply the styles!!

copy the folders into Avalon Companions style folder.

It's the normal iTunes interface, no special skin ;).

Maybe you can use white [or blue] for the progressbar and blue for the artist or album tag. And for the title-track, black or anthracite would be better instead of white, I guess. In fact, white was a very bad idea, you're right ;D. Maybe you can play around with the colors a bit... Or, if you don't have the time, you could send me the prototype of the skin and I play around with the colors a bit...

i've configured this using a new & unreleased CAD test build with new textscroll- and textshadowengine, but i was told by Carlos, that there shouldn't be any compatibility issues when using these styles with the official CAD 1.0.

again: be aware to install the attached font first and copy the styles into the Avalon Companion styles subfolder.

btw: the progressbar is drawn by CAD itself. no extra images for this one. :D

i hope that i'm a bit closer to the target this time.

still i need some details, tho.

1st - are we talking about the pin-striped frame as well? or just the glassy display?

2nd - what exactly do you mean by 'background texture'? the dots in the peak-meter?

3rd - i'd love to use the time-display fonts, but these aren't fonts. what you see are images for each figure drawn in winamp. so don't count on a similar appearance, please. although i have over 600 fonts installed on my system, i wasn't able to find sth coming close to this. :(

4th - should i consider the track info to be displayed on a grey bar (like in your screenshot) using the tag string
%artist% - %title% (%tracktime%) in one single scrolling textline?

it's late here and i'm going to quit for today, but i'll give it a try tomorrow.
certainly i got your reply by then. :)

in resume, it's a nice idea and quite a challenge.

3rd - you don't have to do the same here... The Avalon is kind of busy regarding all those elements... I think your touch here would be better! :)

well, not the stripes itself but the gradient and so on.
but i think i came pretty close. :D

i had a lot of ideas while creating the first style and soon i found myself working on 3 styles at once. :-\

regarding the textcolors.
i know it's hard to read but not completely unreadable, i hope.
i tried some lighter setting, but then the first textline would suddenly look as if it's drawn on top of the glass rather than underneath it. so i chose the current setting to stick to a more realistic appeal.
anyway, feel free to adjust the colors to fit your taste.

I'm using LunaElement 5.1 Black at the moment and the skin has a nice black taskbar. Maybe it would be possible to create a skin in this style and call it Avalon Black.

if you want to change some of the colours by yourself, i'd recommend a tiny little DesktopX widget called Colour Selector.
don't worry you don't have to have DesktopX installed, because this is a standalone widget which runs on any windows platform.

this is how Colour Selector works:
as soon as it is started, it will be placed always on top in the top right corner of your screen.
it indicates colour values in RGB right from the point where your mouse pointer is aiming at.
this way you can call up for example the font color dialog in CAD, then point the cursor on an image (or everywhere else on the screen) and fill in the values displayed by the Colour Selector.
i think this is a very easy way to figure out exact colors used by any source.

not bad, i think. :D

although i guess now i know what's missing or what's different.
it's the case outline stroke that could be a bit lighter (like you see on the edges of your explorer).

also a display like frame for textlines and progressbar might look nice (like the active tab in your taskbar).

for further experiments...
...is it still possible in vista (well, it is vista isn't it?) to increase the taskbar size by dragging its edge towards the top?
if so, maybe you can increase the taskbar size to have it 3 times higher and post a new screenshot of both the windows flag area and part of the blank taskbar. (i hope that the start button will follow the zoom :) )
the bigger resolutions you can provide, the more 'original' material i can use by copy/paste and scale.

the LunaBlack style i created yesterday was made from scratch. that's why the gradient for example looks a tiny little bit more 'blueish' than the original.

perhaps you're already satisfied, but if you like i can give it another try with bigger screenshot material. ;)

- skin and all styles now with smoother textscrolling
- minor adjustments to the cover size
- all recently posted styles added to the main downloadable package

NOTE:
although updated to use in CAD1.1, there shouldn't be any compatibility issue to use the skin in CAD1.0 as well.

- changed toolbar from old (using toolbar.png's) to custom (next.png, play.png and prev.png)
- enhanced toolbar visibility on some styles
- further styles added including a nice cdartdisplay.com style (total amount is now at 95 styles) ;D
- general improvements to make the skin ready for CAD2.0
