Hi Carlos. First, thanks very much for adding support for QMP. It works great!

Another player I use a lot is jetAudio 6, mainly for streams and (oddly enough) videos, VCDs and DVDs.

The Good: near-flawless support for tons of audio and video formats, including Real and QuickTime. Lots of features in the free version. Imho, has one of the best interfaces around.

The Bad: While the basic version is completely free w/ no spyware, you have to upgrade to get some sound enhancements. However, their free version completely outclasses Winamp free version for features (http://www.cowonamerica.com/products/jetaudio/), incl. full-speed rip/burn and audio/video conversion.

The Ugly: They have a semi-bad rep with plugin developers as being difficult to port. I have no idea if this is true or not.

jetAudio really is a great, feature-rich app that I've used or years. Hopeully you'll have time to add it to your list and won't find it too difficult to work with. :)

Be great to see it in a future release.
It's not the most satisfactory & certainly not ideal,but you could replace a skins cover or webradio .png with a stations artwork & use that skin for a particular station.

The fact is that I don't know nothing about JetAudio which is the first main problem right now, while 2.0 is being finished.

A new player, that does not use one of the supported ways to communicate with CAD, means time to study a SDK and check if it can work with VB6, time to code and/or adjust most of the CAD procedures, time to test in both Vista and XP and so on.

In resume, too much work that will require a lot of time.

For N people you ask, you'll get N different answers what player they use. It's just not feasible to support all players under the sun. Moreover, adding support for more players should not be Carlos' job, but the job of some one using that player and capable of writing a plug-in for it.

Carlos, maybe you should make the plug-in spec available for public download, so you can point people to it if they ask what it takes to help adding support for their favorite player.

like every other skin element you can adjust the transparency of case/cover.
i take it that you're interested in a skin without any case.png at all, so it's merely the cover then which would be influenced by these transparency adjustments. ;)

The idea is to click on an album and it plays. Your program doesn't do that. That's what I am mostly looking for. I would really appreciate it if you can do something like that. The problem with Photostacker is that it is shareware and also that it only supports itunes player. Therefore, the program is not a good deal. The other program called Desktop Album Display. http://www.jgaudencio.com/ This too has the same idea as Photostacker. This is freeware. The problem is that it is kind of buggy. It hasn't been updated for about a year. It supports about the same players as your program does. Neither of the three support my media player which is, Xion. I'm satisfied with this player, so I am not really willing to change it. So to sum this up, I would really like it if you can implement the idea of having as many albums on desktop that play once clicked on. And to also have my player be supported. I appologize for mentioning the two programs, but they were used as an example of what I would hope to see in future updates. Thanks for your time.

The idea is nice but it does not fit CAD main goal, at least not right now... ;)

1:st of all... Thank you for a totally SUPERB program. You're doing a great job with this!

My suggestion then...
It has to do with the formatting on the search string which CAD uses to look for covers. While the options available and the formatting available today is great it still lacks a few things.
I'm playing alot of webradio (Digitally Imported) and just seeing the webradio-icon because they name their streams in a strange way is kind of boring when you really would like to see the cover for that song.
Right now I'm listening to "5. Cardamar - Obscure Scenery (D I G I T A L L Y - I M P O R T E D - Chillout...", but because of the formatting CAD can't find a cover for it...
Isn't there any way to make a formatting-list where one could list several different formats for CAD to search for. If it doesn't find a cover using the first format in the list it moves on to the next one and tries that one and so on. If there is no hit until the end of the list is reached the webradio-icon is shown...

I don't know if it's possible, but it would be great if it was!!!

The best feature has to be the possibility to share playlists with a simply URL. Or collaborate with an open one via for example http://spotylist.com/
Spotify also utilize covers for most tunes but it would be great to be able to use CAD for sweeter presentation of such. ;)

Please look into the possiblity to support Spotify in CAD. You wont be sorry. Spotify will be the next big thing and surpass iTunes.

Fantastic program, Carlos. Really.

I was thinking, since you can for example have a cover file named "Underworld - [folder it's in].jpg" it'll assign that cover for all the songs in that folder, if the artist is the same (and there's no album in the id3)

I happen to have lots of Soundtrack albums, but I keep the artist and song name the same. So, it'll be good to have the cover art of the soundtrack album for all the songs.
For example, if I have a jpg image named {any} - Trainspotting OST.jpg, it'll ignore the artist from the id3 and read only the album name, and if it matches, it gets assigned as album cover.

I hope I was clear enough and you consider the idea, if you regard it as useful.

Great program! I've been looking for an mp3 program that has so many features for a long time now. I'd like to request a feature I've been searching for ever since MusicMatch Jukebox was totally destroyed by Yahoo: the ability to automatically set embedded album art as desktop wallpaper (centered or tiled) when the song changes. Since I know nothing about coding I have a feeling it's probably difficult to implement, as I've never seen the feature in ANY program but MusicMatch. But since you make it so easy to make feature requests by actually answering posts from users I figured I'd give it a shot. Naturally if it is possible it wouldn't be something you would get into before version 3.0. Maybe some other users will voice their support for it, too.

I'd also like to second (third?) the motion for inclusion of other ID3 tag fields, particularly comments.

This is really a nice program!

Well, there's 1 problem with it when combined with DExposE2 RELOADED.

The CAD is being set to (pin on desktop), but after using a function in DExposeE2(hide all windows) the CAD was hidden too. Means it was also remove from the desktop.

Cause i think the hide all windows function is better than the windows+m function. As it can bring back the original window state. Hope you understand what i mean.

If a skin has a Slideshow style CAD will use it automatically when a slideshow starts... An alternative slideshow skin, like the full screen one, is possible of course. :)

I think this application is a great add-on, but falls slightly bit short from being a total showstopper. The one big thing it seems to be gravely missing is an autohide feature. It's great that there are system tray notifications when a song is changed, but why limit it to just that?

A more preferred style of operation would be to auto-hide the entire CD Art Display, and limit its display to a "X" amount of seconds which would be defined within Options.

If the user hovers over the CD Art Display, then it becomes active and will stay active so a user can manipulate controls, give ratings to songs, etc. Once a user hovers out of CD Art Display, then the behaviour should be normal that it will once again, disappear after the defined "X" amount of seconds defined within Options.

This behaviour is akin to what the new WinAmp is able to do and is a nice addition to what is almost a feature complete addition.

I really do feel an autohide feature is necessary.

well, you might be glad to hear then, that CAD can already be used as a notifier.
simply open up the skin editor (yes, it's a per skin setting) and click the "edit" tab.
on the left iconbar click on the very top one which will take you to the "appearance" settings.
click in the dropdown box that's reading "always visible" and select "as notifier".
once done you will notice that the Skin Editor will show you some different (notifier specific) options where you can set an interval for the time the notifier should be visible and also if the notifier should stay visible if moused over.

as i mentioned above, this is a per skin setting and so it's mostly up to the skinner whether he would like his skin to be used as a notifier or not.

in resume i am very glad that you now and by all means have the complete CAD that's not even missing a winamp toaster like notifier. ;D

Hello, it would be nice if in the future I could run the cad screensaver without having to start the program first. Maybe as some sort of stand alone app. Some of the fullscreen skins look really good when run as a screensaver, and thats what I mostly use cad for. Right now when i run the screensaver and hit exit, it also quits cad so the screensaver doesn't restart because cad was stopped. Even if i hit the minimize button cad keeps running but the screensaver never restarts.

in a situation where someone would have a 1024x768 sized display and the skins list in CAD's context menu not set to a one column appearance and in addition that someone would have hundreds of skins installed and not willing to exclude either one of those skins from that context menu list, then chances are that at some point the list of skins would exceed the person's display area.
skins in that list would be cut off and there'd be no way to scroll up or down that list.

so.....

I agree with this one. I have been recently trying out Songbird, but I can't get it to be compatible with CAD. And I so miss having CAD that it bugs me. I think Songbird should be one of the supported media players.

It seems you're not the only one wondering about it.

The answer is simple: Microsoft is slowly blocking VB6 (the programming language CAD is written) interaction with their application (such as WLM). So if they didn't change the only way CAD can reach WLM then it'll work. If you install WLM9 and CAD didn't work anymore then the answer is obvious: MS closed another door for VB6.

CAD would not support any player internally. It'd accept applications or dlls that'd make the bridge between CAD and the player.

This is a VERY crucial feature to me, as I rarely own complete albums, just single tracks/files and Last.fm always has the most beautiful cover arts.
I'd f*ckin do it myself, but CAD doesn't have any API/SDK, so blergh. Maybe you should consider rewriting it in C# or C++ and not keep beating a dead horse (ie. VB6). :)

I love having it in the bottom right corner, but when I want to klick on something there its in the way. Ofc I made it so I can click through it, but since I cant see through it I tend to klick on the wrong thing.

that's actually a feature already.
however, it's a per skin setting and merely depends on whether an according skin author decided to actually make his skin a notifier or a regular skin.
you can enable the notifier functionality of a skin by rightclicking CAD and in the Skin Editor you'd have to click on the "edit" tab and then on the topmost icon on the left which would be the "appearance" item. (snapshot-2009-03-18-[1].png in the attachments below)
click in the box that reads "always visible" and switch to "as notifier".
you'll then notice that the Skin Editor window would change its appearance (snapshot-2009-03-18-[2].png in the attachments below) and you can make a few more notifier-specific adjustments.

please note that the notifier feature will look different on various skins and might not be suitable for all of them. ;)

I have the panel off by default however whenever I start my player for the first time, or if it has been stopped, the panel appears. It's just a bit annoying to have to click to close it every time. I have recently moved over to Songbird (http://getsongbird.com) but I am well aware it is a mammoth task to maintain compatibility with so many players, so I will not ask. So I thought why not allow the community to contribute? Ironing out bugs, streamlining features and other improvements would happen exponentially faster when hundreds of people are contributing. It is my understanding that CAD 3.0 will have an SDK, so I suppose the real question is: where along the roadmap do you stand for the development and release of CAD 3.0 SDK?

A thread has been started on GetSatisfaction (http://getsatisfaction.com/songbird/topics/cd_art_display) about Songbird/CAD compatibility. CAD with SDK, accepting any player, is not a simple project but the main messages are ready, used by foobar2000 plugin for example.

One thing I think would make the project easier to manage: CAD would NOT support any player internally. Only by a plugin or directly by the player itself.

The main advantage of this approach: one can make a better Winamp plugin and just replace the CAD one.

It's interesting. It'd clean a lot of code in CAD project. We'll probably lose some players at least initially in the process.

please rightclick CAD and select "Skin Editor".
in the Skin Editor click the "Edit" tab and then hit the topmost icon on the left reading "Appearance".
finally check your settings on the item "Start with elements/panel on".
for a skin that's supposed to not show a panel on startup you'd need to uncheck this option accordingly.
save your changes and you're done. :)

NOTE: this is a per skin setting and would only affect the currently used/edited skin. ;)

1) Emerge main window of CAD (without focus change) at start playing a new track
2) Hotspots in places where a CAD docked to the screen. When mouse cursor in a hotspot zone the program window emerge.

3) Pop-up menu with tracks from current playlist for quick change track

2. I would like to have support for showing .lrc files (karaoke files). They are available for many many songs and scroll the text automatically according to the right position of the lyrics.

Exactly. Same as OS X has probably always had for wallpaper and these days Windows has the option as well. That way CD Art Display really doubles as a slick image slideshow when its idle. Being able to turn off text in this mode would also be great.

a workaround for rather basic skins could be to set the cover to be a hotspot area (in Skin Editor), so that a single click on it would show/hide the text. (like in my L.I.MO skin for example).

EDIT: Okay, also if I go ahead and put CD Art Display back where it belongs then later I bring my center screen back down to 1680x1050 (from 1920x1200) it pushes the art display off the screen entirely. I was looking around for it even after posting this :P

EDIT 2: I am working on my PC and needed to go down to 1 display temporarily. Now I will not be able to get CD art display back in sight 'til the outer monitor is hooked back up.

i have no idea about the possibilities of maybe handling x/y coordinates differently in CAD.

but in order to get back your CAD on screen you'd have to close CAD and open CAD's settings.ini (not skin.ini) in windows' notepad and delete the code strings actually starting with a skin name and then save your changes.
this will reset any stored skin position and puts it back to the coordinates of x=0 and y=0.

so, if you'd launch CAD again it should be displayed in the top left corner of your main screen then. ;)

Make CAD work with web radio plus cover was never a concern. Anyway foobar2000 component can notify CAD when a new cover is found. I'll ask eyebex the component developer.

Players such as iTunes, foobar2000, WMP11, Helium and AlbumPlayer sends the song information to CAD so CAD doesn't have to read any tag.

I'm listening every day most often to webradio with of course the company of CAD, but instead of displaying the album tag (of course) it displays the Unknown word. I'm using Winamp. Is there a way to pass the name of the webradio to the Album tag when listening to Web radios? Thanks in advance and always thanks for this fantastic App.

Right now it's not possible with Winamp. I'm not even sure if the title formating would help here. The Winamp title formating is used by some users that plays just FLAC. See/search FAQ board.

Anyway, now that CAD has a SDK maybe someone could link CAD to Winamp library fully...

Note that CAD interacts directly with iTunes, AlbumPlayer, WMP11, foobar2000 and Helium.

A feature I would LOVE to see is to be able to automatically dock it to the taskbar... and also to have it pop-up over mouse over... you know, like a dock. That way, it is always aligned and no matter which application, if I hold my mouse over the spot for a bit (should be adjustable), it appears no matter which application (unless a full-screened application like a game or something). So, while I am playing WoW (I play in windowed mode so I can see my IMs), I can just hover over the spot. Or, you could make a toolbar in the taskbar. I use CAD for iTunes and I know iTunes has a toolbar... but it is ugly. And unskinnable. And screws up the size of my taskbar on my VS.

Of the 3 suggestions, the 3rd would probably be the easiest to get it to do what I like as it doesn't require the popup as it is always visible if I am not fullscreening an app. But the others would be awesome too.

There's no plan to make CAD edit/write tags due the ID3 module CAD uses.

The freeware mp3Tag (as far as I remember) can be set to batch embed lyrics.

Well, actually it IS possible.
But it's a decision of the skinner to do a 10/10 rating.
Most skinners use the 5/5 rating system.
Maybe because they don't use MediaMonkey or want to keep compatibility to other media players.

Any chance you could realize a "Left/Top" filed for the knob?
Would be great to be able to move the knob independant from the fill position.

I would like to see better lyrics search. I have alot of music and most of it heavy metal and doesn't seem to find most of them. Maybe even let it pull lyrics from the mp3 file if the user has them saved to there mp3's. This is the only downfall I have with CAD is poor lyrics search.:(

I registered for the sole reason of agreeing with this idea. If CAD can skin/show a playlist for winamp or any other media player out there... I would never leave CAD.

I have only recently started using it, however, I love it beyond winamp/itunes/foobar's normal usage. It's just awesomely convenient. The playlist addition (as an option) would top it off.

This plugin is part of a third party DLL that is not developed anymore.

I can’t even update for Winamp itself.

Any player developer can easily add a feature to start a program automatically. Ask them. It’s a simple functionality to implement.

Right now certain games will minimize when ever the picture changes which mean I have to close CD Art Display and then load it after I am done playing.

One additional small thing, on the progress bar skinning if you take the opacity down to 0 it is more visible than when it is set to 1. Not sure why this is but I would like to have an invisible progress bar if that is at all possible.

You can pause a slideshow by clicking the CAD play/pause button.

CAD does not accept a zero to set opacity. You can disable the progress bar though.

just minutes ago i was playing around with the textline rotation feature and to my disappointment i recognized that it isn't possible to have these textlines rotated to a full 90° degrees. :(
i mean, it's possible to apply 90° in SkinEditor (either + or -), but the text would be cut off and there's no way to bring it back to visibility again (via textline fine adjustment or anything) unless i'd have it rotate less than fully vertical.

so, my question would be: is there any way you can fix that?
i have a skin in mind that would be located on either side (left or right) of your screen, like a sidebar, which would make it possible to keep as much desktop real estate as possible, while you could still work in large window's.

there's a software development kit (SDK) which you can suggest to the spotify creators so they can create an interface to interact with CAD. [link] (http://www.cdartdisplay.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1200)

support for new players will only work that specific way and there's no plan to add support for additional players from the CAD side.

It's not possible to make the progressbar progressing in a specific interval. Just because it depends on the lenght of the track playing and the skin itself (or better its progressbar).

Every progressbar is different. While one may be "drawn" by using CAD and has a lenght of let's say 100px, another artist has created an image with just 85px or another one has decided to use an animated progressbar consisting of 66 animation steps.
CAD calculates every progressbar depending on its parameters and the tracklenght.

If someone can explain this better, or something I wrote was partially wrong, please correct me. :)

Not sure if it was mentioned but how does one go about adding support to other players? Like I want to add support for last.fm. The client last.fm has shows track, artist, album, album art, length, etc. I very much doubt that I could get the last.fm developers to add support as contacting a company development team is considerably hard to do for such things as this. I was wonder if perhaps there was another way. I know several players have support for last.fm via a plugin. Songbird, Winamp used to, Fire.fm (addon for Firefox), etc. Even Skype is able to get the info from it or maybe it sends to Skype. The only buttons that would need to be operable would be the play/stop, skip, and volume. The love/ban can be done through the last.fm client if they really feel like love/banning.

I know there would be a lot of work but if there is a way, I might like to figure it out.

BTW, need to change the Skype button. LOL

the link you gave turns out a "404 not found". :confused:

however, ... CAD is already capable of displaying half stars, but it's a matter of whether or not the player you'd use in conjunction with CAD is supporting half stars. winamp for example is only giving an opportunity to rate songs from 0 (zero) to 5 stars, while foobar is going all the way up to 10 stars, which could of course be half stars in a skin as well.

right now, most skins have only graphics for full stars, which would be the files:

0.png (unrated)
2.png (1 star)
4.png (2 stars)
6.png (3 stars)
8.png (4 stars)
10.png (5 stars)

but CAD also supports the graphics of:

1.png (0.5 star)
3.png (1.5 stars)
5.png (2.5 stars)
7.png (3.5 stars)
9.png (4.5 stars)

but .. as i've mentioned above they'd only display, if CAD would be used with players to even support half stars.
besides, the creator of the skin must provide the according png graphics for half stars in his skin's "Rating" folder.

so, you see there's no need for having a half-star-support to be added to CAD, because it's already there. ;)

I suggest, that whenever a song has no album specified in the id3-tag, the song should be regarded as a single, with different cover-saving settings (%artist% - %title%.jpg) and different cover-searching settings (search for %artist% and %title%).

And: Would it be possible to create cover transitions which would "erase" the cover. Lets say I would have a glass skin, and would like to make the cover disappear from the desktop "with" the transition, and then the next image would be drawn out of nowhere. Do you know what I mean? :)
I can't explain better. Maybe something like a mask image. Just in animation. And it would have to work for transparent cases.

It isn't a bug. The Lyrics window isn't resizable like any other window. The skinner decides its dimensions. But you can change them by using the skin editor. Select the Lyrics icon and you'll see the proper options. Afterwards just save the skin.

Ah, I didn't describe what I meant correctly. Using images on the harddisks or in ID3-Tags works just fine with singles, it's about fetching images from the internet when a single without a local image is played.

The thing is, that singles often have different covers than when the same song is part of an album, that's why I never enter album information for singles in id3-tags. But that just gave me an idea: maybe it would be best if I change my habit of id3-tagging, and put the song-name as album-name for all the artists.

I'll test it and let you know of the results :)

Thanks once more, I'll be sending a screenshot of my final desktop arrangement once I'm finished.

To smoothly scroll the lyrics, there is also the option to offer a scroll button. Unfortunately only a few skins use this feature. Take a look at "VU" and "Revtin". Also most of my newer skins offer this feature. Not sure why so many skinner don't use this feature... :(

Hmm, good idea. I had this problem once or twice too. You can always make a backup of your settings.ini, or just copy the "Left" and "Top" entries of it as a backup.

I think you can set Winamp as the player in CAD “Options>Player” and it should work with AIMP2.

The lyrics window don´t minimize, don´t follow window state, if the lyrics are showing, everything get minimized but the lyrics keep in desktop, it will be nice if follow window state to, thank you!!!!!!!

The lyrics window can be a separate window or part of the panel (depends what the skinner chose). If it's part of the panel it will minimize too. As a seperate window it can't minimize. The same reason for following the case state.

Yes barberio, i understand the situation, but i suggest an option to the separated window also follow the main cad state, it will be very helpfull for situations then the lyrics are separated from the main cad window, thank you very much for your reply.

I set it to 70% opacity and it would be nice if it would come to 100% on mouse over.

I'm using the Experiment Skin.

Cover art for specific radio station, possible?

I'd like to set my own cover pictures for the stations I listen to most, has anyone managed to do this?

For example, it could be done by looking at the url, or %filename%, which might look like this: http://voxsc1.somafm.com:3000

Easiest way would be to just place a picture in my coverfolder, but since the url contains characters that aren't allowed in filenames I can't :/

Possibly make CAD replace those characters when it looks for matching search patterns, something like "httpcolonslashslashvoxsc1.somafm.comcolon3000.jpg"... I dunno.
Any workarounds?

I'm using foobar 1.1.1 and CAD 2.0.1 and am attempting my first skin. It's going well, but I was wondering if there was support for how foobar does repeat and shuffle? Foobar has two repeat modes (playlist and song) and three shuffle modes (tracks, albums, and folders) and CAD does support these options, but I can't find a way to reflect these options with the skin. The skins only allow for icons representing on/off states even though clicking the icons cycles through the foobar repeat/shuffle options.

It's a bit confusing to see the "off" repeat icon but have foobar repeating one song!

So, since CAD supports the multiple choices that foobar has, is there ALSO support for skinning these options? And if not, can it be added?

Lets see what the Toolbar (http://www.cdartdisplay.com/forum/showpost.php?p=5289&postcount=3) section in the 'How To Make A Skin' (http://www.cdartdisplay.com/forum/showthread.php?t=590) thread says:

We have these button states ->
Toggle repeat
repeat.png = off state
repeat1.png = on state
repeat2.png = mouse over off state
repeat3.png = mouse over on state

Toggle shuffle
shuffle.png = off state
shuffle1.png = on state
shuffle2.png = mouse over off state
shuffle3.png = mouse over on state After some attempts, I was able to find out how it works (never really used the buttons in a skin before).

The button states work like described above. 2 'on' and 'off' states (one for normal and one for mouseover'. So the button can't reflect the different modes.


Using foobar myself I can say it works like this:

clicking repeat once - repeat the whole library
clicking repeat again - repeating the current song
another click - normal mode again

clicking shuffle once - shuffle the whole library
clicking shuffle again - shuffle the current album
another click - normal mode again

So, it is not possible to reflect the different modes - there is only one button state for 'on'. The others are 'off' and 2 mouseover states.
But: you have posted your question to the 'suggestions thread'. Maybe Carlos thinks about adding a second 'on' state so we can make out which mode is currently active. ;)

A good idea (if possible)! Maybe Carlos can include a way to customize covers for specific urls. :)

It'd be nice if selecting which player is being used in the CAD menu would change which buttons were allowed - that way the multiple modes would be grouped with foobar and not cause drama with other players which only have two states. :)

Maybe use percent encoding (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Percent_encoding)? I don't know how current its use is, but I've seen it lots of places.

Suggestion- Give an option in the skin editor to slide a panel/toolbar/images instead of anniamted images.'coz making different images for slidi' the panel is A pain.Even a button for it so that the person can slide it.:D

Ah! One of the lazy folks here (and impatient too)! :D It's not me who can decide this. But there are at least 2 reasons against that suggestion:
- Carlos would have to code the whole procedure again (and I don't know if that's possible)
- complex animations like in my Bottomless 2010 (http://www.cdartdisplay.com/index.php?categoryid=2&p13_sectionid=3&p13_fileid=158) won't be possible then
